Fuga dall’Iraq/Escape from Iraq

George ci riceve con il vestito da festa. La casa è tirata a lucido e profumata, nessuno indossa la tuta o il pigiama per star comodi in casa. No, è un’occasione importante: a cena ci sono ospiti, due ragazzi italiani. E’ uno dei pochi attimi di vita sociale che questa famiglia di iracheni si può concedere dal suo arrivo a Beirut, cinque mesi fa. Scappati dalla persecuzione nel loro paesino, Telskof, vicinissimo a Mosul, George, sua moglie e i cinque figli, adesso vivono nella periferia beirutina di Sed el Bauchrieh, fra un centro commerciale e un supermercato, nel quartiere assiro della capitale libanese.

“Nella Bibbia Dio dice che se la tua terra non ti vuole puoi abbandonarla. Ecco, l’Iraq non ci voleva più” dice George, in un inglese stentato con l’aiuto delle due figlie maggiori che lo stanno imparando grazie alla tv. Il racconto che fanno della loro terra d’origine parla di attentati davanti alle scuole, intimidazioni, paura che diventa terrore che diventa segregazione in casa. Una casa di proprietà, su due piani, con garage e giardino: “I fiori sono l’unica cosa che mi mancano”. E per un minuto, solo un minuto, Lina smette di ridere.

George get us with the best dress. His house is really cleaned and scented, nobody wears the suit to be comfortable in own home. They don’t, because this is a special occasion: two italian guys are host for the dinner. This is one of the few social life moment this iraqi family can live since they had arrived in Beirut, five months ago. They escaped from the persecution into theyr little town, Telskof, really closed to Mosul. George and his family are living now into Sed el Bauchrieh, a Beirut suburb, among a mall and a supermarket, in the assirian zone of lebanese capital.

“God says into the Bible that if your land doesn’t want you, you can quit it. So, Iraq did not want us no more” George says, with a difficult english language, helped by the two bigger daughters who are learning english by television. Theyr story about Iraq is about attempts ahead schools, about fear becoming terror, becoming segregation into home. An own home with a garage and a garden: “Flowers are the only thng I miss”. And for a minute, only one minute, Lina stops laughing.
